The new Boskalis mega cutter Helios was named and christened on July 1 in Rotterdam (Netherlands). It’s the largest and most powerful dredger that the Dutch company has ever developed.

During the weeks prior to the christening ceremony the dredger carried out some tests in The North Sea, which were performed using one of MTG's multipurpose cutter-heads.

Over the last two years MTG has developed a new section in its Monzón factory, entirely dedicated to the design and manufacturing of cutter-heads for all types of terrains (clay, sand and rock). Thus, ensuring a manufacturing process with comprehensive quality controls that maximize the reliability and productivity of these systems.

The self-propelled Helios is 152 meters long, has a breadth of 28 meters and is able to dredge at depths of 6 to 35 meters on extremely hard ground. With a total pumping capacity of 15,600 kW and a maximum cutter power of 7,000 kW, the Helios cutter ladder weighs 2,060 tons, making it the heaviest in the world.

The Helios will be deployed for dredging activities related a large contract in the Middle East.
